The UK’s intense heatwave has turned deadly after two more teenagers died in separate water related incidents, as the country recorded its warmest May night ever. Authorities say temperatures remained unusually high overnight, offering little relief after days of extreme heat that have pushed Britain into record-breaking territory.
Forecasters expect temperatures to stay near 30C across parts of England as health alerts remain in place and emergency services continue to respond to heat-related incidents. Officials have urged people to avoid swimming in unsafe waters after multiple drownings during the bank holiday weekend. A third teenager was also confirmed dead after getting into difficulty in water amid the soaring temperatures.
The extreme weather has also disrupted transport services. One train operator cancelled several routes, warning that the heat could damage tracks and overhead power lines. Fire crews across the UK are also battling grass and wildfire outbreaks caused by the dry conditions.
Meteorologists say the heatwave is highly unusual for May and reflects a growing trend of earlier and more intense heat events linked to climate change. The Met Office warned that thunderstorms could follow the hot spell later in the week, raising the risk of flash flooding and further disruption.
