South Africa’s annual consumer inflation rate fell to 4.3% in July, down sharply from 5.0% in June, marking the first slowdown in five months, according to Statistics South Africa. The Consumer Price Index rose by just 0.2% month on month, compared with 0.7% in June. The decline was mainly driven by lower fuel prices, softer food inflation and smaller increases in municipal tariffs.

Food and non alcoholic beverage inflation dropped to 0.9%, its lowest level since June 2010. Meat and cereal prices were among the main contributors to the slowdown. Transport inflation also eased significantly to 8.9% from 12.9%, following a sharp decline in petrol and diesel prices in July.

However, analysts warn that the improvement could be temporary. Rising global oil prices linked to renewed tensions between the US and Iran could push fuel costs higher again, potentially putting upward pressure on inflation in the coming months. The latest figures provide some relief for South African consumers and could also strengthen expectations around the country’s interest rate outlook.
