Sacked Ukrainian Defence Minister Calls for Presidential Election

Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has called for presidential elections to be held in Ukraine despite the ongoing war with Russia, in a challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In a video posted online, Fedorov said “democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia”, arguing that Ukraine should find a legal and safe way to restore the democratic process even while the war continues.

Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia’s full scale invasion in February 2022, meaning national elections have been suspended. Holding a vote during the conflict would also present major security and logistical challenges. Fedorov was unexpectedly dismissed as defence minister in late July, only six months after taking the position. His removal sparked protests and was reportedly linked to tensions within Ukraine’s military leadership.

During his time in office, Fedorov was credited with expanding Ukraine’s use of drones and technology, fighting corruption and improving military procurement and battlefield performance. He did not announce any personal political ambitions or call for an immediate election date. Instead, he urged the government to create a “legal, safe and realistic mechanism” that would allow Ukrainians to choose their leaders even if the war continues. Zelenskyy has yet to respond publicly to Fedorov’s call.
