Beninese music icon Angélique Kidjo has achieved another historic milestone, becoming the first Black African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The honour adds another major achievement to a career that has spanned more than four decades and helped bring African music to audiences around the world.
Kidjo received her star on August 18, 2026, joining a prestigious list of international entertainers recognised on the famous Hollywood Boulevard. Her achievement is significant not only because of her individual career, but also because it creates another landmark moment for African representation within one of the world’s most recognised entertainment institutions.
Born in Benin, Kidjo has built an international career by blending West African musical traditions with sounds from across the world. Her work has consistently crossed cultural and musical boundaries, helping establish her as one of Africa’s most respected global performers.
The Hollywood recognition comes after years of international success. Kidjo is a five-time Grammy Award winner, with her latest Grammy coming for Mother Nature. Her official biography notes that she has released 18 albums and has been recognised with honours including the Polar Music Prize and a place on Time magazine’s list of the world’s most influential people.
Her influence also extends across generations. Kidjo has collaborated with and supported younger African artists, including Burna Boy, Yemi Alade and Mr Eazi. Her 2026 album HOPE!! continues that tradition, featuring artists and musicians from different generations and musical backgrounds, including Ayra Starr, Davido, Quavo, Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams.
That cross-generational approach has become an important part of Kidjo’s legacy. Rather than limiting her music to one African sound, she has consistently used collaboration and experimentation to connect African musical traditions with international audiences.
Her latest achievement therefore represents more than another award for an already decorated career. It demonstrates how far African artists have travelled within the global entertainment industry, from being largely placed within specialist “world music” spaces to receiving recognition alongside some of the biggest names in international entertainment.
For Kidjo, the moment also carries a wider meaning. Her career has repeatedly centred African culture, identity and creativity, while her international collaborations have helped create bridges between Africa and the rest of the world.
