Saudi Arabia Executes Two Bangladeshis Over Alleged Acts Inside Mecca Mosque

Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals convicted of committing what authorities described as “indecent acts” inside a mosque in Mecca, prompting Bangladesh to demand further information after saying it was not notified before the executions.

The Saudi Interior Ministry identified the individuals as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar. According to the ministry, security officials arrested the pair, investigated the case and referred it to a competent court, which sentenced them to death under ta’zir, a category of discretionary punishment under Islamic law.

Saudi authorities said the sentences were upheld by the relevant judicial authority and later authorised by a royal order. The executions were carried out in the Mecca region on October 14, 2026. However, the ministry did not identify the specific mosque or provide detailed information about the alleged conduct.

Bangladesh has expressed concern over the lack of advance notification. Officials said neither the country’s foreign ministry nor its diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia was informed before the sentences were carried out. Bangladesh has since contacted Saudi authorities and requested detailed information about the case and the judicial proceedings.

The case has also raised questions about the ability of foreign nationals to receive consular assistance during criminal proceedings abroad. Bangladesh is awaiting a detailed response from Riyadh before determining its next steps, including arrangements relating to the return of the two citizens’ bodies.

Despite the diplomatic concern, Bangladesh has indicated that it expects the matter to be addressed through official channels. The case highlights the serious legal consequences foreign nationals may face under Saudi law and the importance of understanding and complying with the laws of a host country.
