Xavi Hernández has been appointed the new head coach of the Netherlands, taking over a national team looking for a fresh start after its heartbreaking 2026 World Cup campaign. The former Barcelona manager has signed a contract running through the 2030 World Cup, marking his first appointment as a national-team coach.

The 46-year-old Spaniard replaces Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in the Round of 32 at this year’s World Cup. Koeman’s second spell in charge had included a run to the Euro 2024 semi-finals, but the early World Cup exit prompted the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) to begin searching for a new direction.

Xavi’s appointment is particularly significant because he becomes the Netherlands’ first foreign head coach since Austria’s Ernst Happel led the team in the late 1970s. It also represents a major return to management for Xavi, who has been away from the dugout since leaving Barcelona in 2024.

Despite being Spanish, Xavi has a strong connection with the football philosophy that has shaped the Netherlands for generations. His development at Barcelona was heavily influenced by Johan Cruyff, while Dutch coaches such as Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard also played important roles in his career. Xavi has described himself as being, in his words, a “son of Dutch football” because of those influences.

That connection appears central to why the KNVB selected him. Xavi’s preferred style is based on possession, attacking football, creativity and taking the initiative — principles closely associated with the Dutch football tradition. The challenge will be turning that philosophy into results with a national team that has considerable attacking and midfield talent but has struggled to convert its potential into major international success.

Xavi arrives with significant experience at the highest level. As a player, he won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain and became one of Barcelona’s greatest midfielders. As a manager, he guided Barcelona to the La Liga title in 2023 after previously coaching Qatari club Al Sadd.

His first major task will be rebuilding confidence after the World Cup disappointment while preparing the Netherlands for the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup. His competitive debut is scheduled for September 24 against Germany in the Nations League.

The KNVB had explored several alternatives before settling on Xavi. Liverpool manager Arne Slot was among the names considered but ended discussions because he preferred the day-to-day environment of club football. The Dutch federation ultimately opted for Xavi’s international experience as a player and his possession-based coaching philosophy.
