Fifa Crisis Deepens as Republic of Ireland Withdraws Support for Gianni Infantino While Northern Ireland Backs UEFA’s Position

Gianni Infantino’s bid to remain Fifa president has suffered another setback after the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) withdrew its previous support for his re-election, while the Irish Football Association (IFA) in Northern Ireland said it supports UEFA’s position amid growing concerns over his leadership.

The FAI said its board had decided to rescind a letter of support it issued earlier this year, citing concerns over governance, transparency and what it described as a lack of meaningful consultation. The association said its own experience with governance reforms made it particularly conscious of the need to promote accountability and best practice within football administration.

The IFA has not formally withdrawn its own support for Infantino, but said it backs UEFA’s current position and is carefully considering the wider concerns within football. The two positions nevertheless underline the growing unease surrounding the Fifa president among football authorities across Ireland and Europe.

The controversy centres on Fifa’s recently abandoned proposal to establish a commercial subsidiary, Fifa Forward Enterprise, which would have allowed private investors to acquire minority stakes in the organisation’s commercial operations. The plan raised concerns among several football governing bodies about transparency, consultation and the future control of Fifa’s most valuable competitions.

UEFA, alongside the Asian Football Confederation and Concacaf, has publicly criticised Infantino’s handling of the proposal, accusing Fifa’s leadership of damaging trust. UEFA has also threatened possible legal action and requested the preservation of documents and communications relating to the investment plan.

The backlash has already resulted in several national associations reconsidering their support for Infantino. Wales became the first of the British and Irish associations to withdraw its backing, followed by England, while other European federations have also expressed concerns.

Infantino’s position is not yet in immediate danger, however. He continues to enjoy support from several member associations across different regions, and some national federations have publicly backed his bid for another term. The challenge for his opponents will be turning their criticism into enough votes to seriously threaten his re-election.

The dispute has therefore evolved beyond the abandoned investment proposal. It has become a wider debate about transparency, accountability and how decisions are made within world football’s governing body.

With the FAI now withdrawing its endorsement and the IFA aligning itself with UEFA, pressure on Infantino is continuing to build. Whether that pressure becomes strong enough to derail his bid for another term will depend on how many of Fifa’s 211 member associations ultimately decide to follow Ireland’s lead.
