HBO has officially renewed its upcoming Harry Potter television series for a second season, months before the highly anticipated first season is set to premiere later this year.

The network confirmed that filming for the new season will begin in autumn 2026 as production continues to move forward on the ambitious adaptation of JK Rowling’s bestselling fantasy saga. While HBO has not formally announced the second season’s title, it is widely expected to adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second novel in the globally successful book series.

The first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere during the Christmas season on HBO Max and marks the beginning of what the studio describes as a decade-long television adaptation covering all seven books.

HBO previously revealed plans for each season of the series to focus on one novel from Rowling’s original story, allowing for a more detailed and expansive retelling than the blockbuster film franchise released between 2001 and 2011.

As part of the latest announcement, writer Jon Brown has been promoted to co-showrunner for the second season alongside Francesca Gardiner, who led development of the first season. Brown is known for his work on the award-winning drama Succession and was part of the creative team during production of season one.

Gardiner said the decision to begin filming season two so quickly reflects HBO’s strategy of overlapping production schedules in order to maintain continuity and momentum across the long-running project.

She added that Brown’s expanded role would be “key to maintaining our momentum” as the series moves into its next phase of production.

The Harry Potter reboot remains one of HBO’s biggest upcoming projects and has generated intense global attention since it was first announced. Supporters of the new adaptation argue that the television format will allow for deeper exploration of characters, subplots, and magical lore that could not fully fit into the original films.

At the same time, the project has continued to attract debate online due to controversy surrounding Rowling’s public comments on gender issues in recent years. Despite this, HBO executives have repeatedly defended the series and emphasized its focus on faithfully adapting the beloved books for a new generation of viewers.

Casting announcements for the lead trio playing Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley are still being closely watched by fans, while speculation continues over which actors will portray iconic characters such as Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, and Lord Voldemort.

With filming on the second season already being prepared before audiences have seen the first episode, HBO appears confident that the Wizarding World franchise will once again become one of television’s biggest global events.
