Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has warned head coach Michael Carrick that he could face serious pressure if the club remain in the bottom half of the Premier League table by January. The warning followed United’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, October 18, which extended their winless run in all competitions to six matches.
United currently sit 13th in the Premier League, having collected just seven points from their opening seven league matches. Their record has raised concerns among supporters, particularly given the club’s ambitions to qualify for the Champions League and rebuild its position among England’s leading teams.
Despite the result, Neville believes the performance at Elland Road offered some encouragement. Speaking on his podcast, the Sky Sports pundit described the match as a possible stepping stone for Carrick, suggesting that improved organisation and defensive discipline could provide a foundation for better results.
However, Neville stressed that improvement must come quickly. He believes Manchester United should be targeting a top-five finish, arguing that missing out on Champions League qualification could affect the club’s finances and ability to attract high profile players. He warned that remaining 13th by January would make Carrick’s position increasingly difficult.
The draw against Leeds illustrated both progress and continuing weaknesses. Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead in the 35th minute, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised after the break from a corner. United showed greater defensive structure than in some previous performances but struggled to turn their possession into enough clear attacking opportunities.
Neville also highlighted the importance of new midfielder Carlos Baleba staying fit. The former Brighton player has added physical strength and presence to United’s midfield alongside Andrey Santos. Neville suggested that the partnership could help the team become more difficult to play against by reducing the space available to opponents.
Manchester United now face a demanding run of fixtures, beginning with a Champions League trip to Como on October 21, followed by a Premier League home match against Bournemouth on October 25 and an away game against Chelsea on October 31. These matches could provide an early indication of whether Carrick’s tactical adjustments are beginning to produce consistent results.
For Carrick, the challenge is to turn signs of improvement into victories before pressure intensifies. Neville has not called for immediate panic, acknowledging that seven matches represent an early stage of the season. Nevertheless, his message is clear: Manchester United must start climbing the table if they are to meet expectations and keep their Champions League ambitions alive.
