Denis Sassou Nguesso has been sworn in for a fifth presidential term, extending his decades-long hold on power in the Republic of the Congo following a decisive election victory.
The 82-year-old leader took the oath of office in a ceremony held in the capital, Brazzaville, after winning nearly 95% of the vote in the March 2026 presidential election, according to official results.
Sassou Nguesso, one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, first came to power in 1979. After losing office in 1992, he returned to power in 1997 following a civil war and has remained in control ever since, ruling the oil-rich nation for more than four decades.
In his inauguration speech, the president pledged to focus on economic development, job creation, and infrastructure improvements. He emphasized the need to create employment opportunities, particularly for young people, and to strengthen key sectors such as agriculture and industry.
Official figures reported voter turnout above 80%, and observers from the African Union described the election as “peaceful and orderly.” However, opposition candidates and critics disputed the credibility of the process, citing allegations of fraud and questioning the level of participation.
The election took place against a backdrop of political tension. Major opposition parties either boycotted the vote or had limited participation, while concerns were raised about restrictions on campaigning and broader electoral fairness.
Sassou Nguesso’s continued rule has been made possible in part by a 2015 constitutional referendum that removed presidential term and age limits, allowing him to run for additional terms.
Despite recent economic stabilization, the country continues to face significant challenges, including high public debt, widespread poverty, and youth unemployment. Analysts say these issues will test the government’s ability to deliver on its promises during the new term.
With this latest inauguration, Sassou Nguesso further cements his position among Africa’s longest-serving heads of state, even as questions persist about governance, democratic processes, and the country’s political future.
