The United Kingdom has recorded its hottest May day ever after temperatures reached 33.5C at London’s Heathrow Airport, breaking previous records and intensifying an early summer heatwave across the country.
Weather experts say temperatures could rise even further as the day continues, meaning the current record may still be exceeded. The extreme conditions have also set a new record for the hottest May bank holiday Monday ever recorded in the UK.
In addition to the daytime heat, overnight temperatures also remained unusually high, officially breaking the UK’s warmest May night record. Meteorologists say the combination of intense daytime heat and unusually warm nights reflects the strength of the current weather system affecting much of the country.

Large crowds gathered in parks, beaches, and public spaces as Britons attempted to enjoy the rare heatwave, while health officials warned vulnerable people to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours.
Climate experts continue to link the increasing frequency of extreme weather events across Europe to global climate change, with heatwaves arriving earlier and becoming more intense in recent years.
