The administration of US President Donald Trump is investigating Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar over allegations concerning her immigration history, raising questions about whether the government could seek to revoke her American citizenship. The reported investigation has intensified political tensions ahead of the November midterm elections, with Omar’s allies accusing the administration of targeting a prominent critic of the president.
According to The Wall Street Journal, investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father misrepresented information in immigration documents when the family arrived from Somalia in 1995. Federal agents reportedly searched her Washington home and seized electronic devices and documents as part of the investigation. Omar’s office has rejected the allegations and characterised the inquiry as politically motivated.
Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district and became one of the first two Muslim women elected to the US House of Representatives in 2018. She has frequently criticised Trump’s immigration policies, making her a recurring target of attacks from the president and his allies. The latest investigation has revived longstanding allegations about her background, although previous scrutiny did not result in the loss of her citizenship.
Under US law, a president cannot simply revoke a citizen’s nationality. The government must establish legal grounds through the appropriate judicial process, including proving that citizenship was unlawfully obtained or secured through material misrepresentation. An investigation alone does not mean Omar will lose her citizenship or face deportation.
The case has also raised concerns about the independence of federal law enforcement and the potential use of investigations against political opponents. Its outcome remains uncertain, but it could become a significant test of the legal safeguards protecting American citizenship and the limits of executive power.
