At least 27 students and a teacher have been killed after the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, trapping children beneath the rubble and leaving dozens injured. Rescue teams are continuing to search for survivors as authorities investigate the building’s structural condition and examine whether safety regulations were ignored.
The disaster occurred on Thursday, October 15, at the privately run Al-Khair Education Center in Peshawar’s Dir Colony. Most of the children killed were younger than 13. Hospital officials confirmed that injured pupils had been taken to Lady Reading Hospital, where an emergency was declared to handle the casualties. Reports on the number of injured have varied as rescue operations continue, and officials have warned that the death toll could rise.
According to rescue officials, the roof of an upper floor gave way, causing the structure beneath it to collapse onto classrooms where pupils were being taught. At least 45 children had been pulled from the rubble, while authorities feared that others remained trapped. The school’s location on a narrow, congested street complicated access for emergency vehicles and the transportation of injured children to nearby hospitals. Residents joined professional rescuers in efforts to clear debris and reach survivors.
Peshawar police confirmed that the school’s owner had been arrested following preliminary findings that the building was structurally weak. Investigators are working to establish the precise cause of the collapse and determine whether construction deficiencies or failures to comply with safety requirements contributed to the tragedy. The arrest does not, by itself, establish criminal responsibility, and the findings of the investigation will be important in determining accountability. The school administration had not issued an immediate public response in Reuters’ initial report.
The disaster has prompted an immediate response from provincial authorities. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi ordered a province-wide structural safety audit of schools to identify potentially dangerous buildings and ensure that corrective measures are taken. He also requested a detailed report on the incident and directed officials to ensure that injured children receive appropriate medical care. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari expressed shock over the loss of young lives, describing the incident as a tragedy that had plunged the country into grief.
The collapse has renewed concerns about building safety in Pakistan, where poorly enforced construction standards and the use of substandard materials have contributed to deadly structural failures. In July 2026, four schoolchildren were killed when a roof collapsed at a tutoring centre under construction in Lahore. The two incidents have intensified questions about whether buildings used to educate children are being adequately inspected and whether authorities have the resources to enforce safety rules consistently.
Beyond the immediate rescue effort, the investigation is expected to focus on how the school building was constructed, whether it was suitable for the number of pupils using it and whether inspections could have identified the risks beforehand. The province-wide audit could help expose similar hazards, but its effectiveness will depend on whether unsafe buildings are repaired or closed and whether those responsible for serious violations face appropriate consequences.
For families waiting for news of their children, the priority remains the search for survivors and medical care for the injured. For Pakistan’s authorities, the tragedy presents a wider test: ensuring that schools are safe places for children and that preventable construction failures do not lead to another devastating loss of life.
