Real Madrid have reportedly reached an agreement with Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois over a one-year contract extension that would keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2028. The move reflects the Spanish club’s determination to retain one of its most dependable players as it continues to compete for major domestic and European honours. However, the agreement is yet to be formally signed and officially announced.

Courtois’ existing contract runs until June 2027, but reports from football journalist Fabrizio Romano and Spanish media indicate that both sides are keen to continue their partnership. At 34, the Belgian remains Real Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper, with his experience, reflexes and ability to make decisive saves making him a key figure in the squad. Rather than wait until the end of the season to decide his future, the club appears ready to secure his services for another campaign.

Since joining Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018, Courtois has built an impressive record, winning multiple LaLiga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. One of his most memorable performances came in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool, when he produced a series of crucial saves to secure a 1–0 victory and help Madrid lift the trophy. He also won the Yashin Trophy in 2022, recognising him as one of the world’s leading goalkeepers.

The reported extension would provide Real Madrid with stability in goal while giving the club more time to plan for the future. Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin remains an alternative, but Courtois’ continued performances have made replacing him a difficult decision. If the agreement is completed, the Belgian could remain at the club for a decade, further cementing his legacy in Madrid.

For now, supporters await official confirmation from Real Madrid. If signed, the new deal would underline the club’s confidence in Courtois and its belief that his experience and quality remain essential to its ambitions in Spain and Europe.
