The Headies, Nigeria’s most prestigious music awards platform, is set to make history once again after announcing that its 18th edition will be hosted in Canada. The decision marks another major step in the award show’s ongoing efforts to position Afrobeats and African music on the global stage, while also reflecting the growing influence of Nigerian artists across North America and beyond.
Founded in 2006 by music executive Ayo Animashaun, the Headies was established to recognize excellence in the Nigerian music industry. Originally known as the Hip Hop World Awards, the ceremony has evolved into one of Africa’s most influential entertainment events, celebrating artists, producers, songwriters, and other key contributors to the continent’s rapidly expanding music scene. Over the years, the awards have honored some of the biggest names in African music, including artists who later became global superstars.
The announcement of the Canadian edition comes at a time when Afrobeats continues to enjoy unprecedented international success. Nigerian stars such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Tems, Rema, and Ayra Starr have expanded the genre’s reach through sold-out arena tours, chart success, major festival appearances, and international award recognition. The Headies has increasingly sought to mirror this global growth by taking its brand beyond Nigeria’s borders.
This is not the first time the Headies has experimented with international venues. The awards previously staged editions in the United States as part of efforts to strengthen its international appeal and connect with the growing African diaspora. After returning to Lagos for the 17th edition, organizers have now chosen Canada as the next destination, reinforcing the theme of “Africa To The World” that has become central to the awards’ vision.
Canada has become an increasingly important market for African music in recent years. Cities such as Toronto and Calgary are home to large African communities, while Afrobeats continues to gain popularity among mainstream audiences. The choice of Canada is therefore seen as a strategic move that could further strengthen commercial opportunities for African artists while introducing the Headies brand to a wider international audience.
The announcement has generated mixed reactions among fans and industry stakeholders. While many have praised the move as evidence of Afrobeats’ growing global influence, others have questioned whether Nigeria’s biggest music awards should continue taking major editions outside the country. Some fans argue that the ceremony should remain rooted in Nigeria, where the industry was built, while supporters believe international expansion is necessary to reflect the genre’s worldwide impact.
As anticipation builds for the 18th edition, attention will now turn to the nominees, performances, and special moments expected to define another chapter in the remarkable global journey of African music. With Canada set to host the event, the Headies is once again making a statement that Afrobeats is no longer simply a Nigerian phenomenon, it is a worldwide cultural force.
