Organisers of The Headies have announced new dates for the awards’ 18th edition, moving the main ceremony from October 23, 2026, to April 10 and 11, 2027, in Toronto, Canada.
The announcement made public in October, means artistes, nominees, music fans and other industry stakeholders will have to wait several more months for the ceremony. According to the organisers, the decision is intended to create room for a broader programme of activities connecting Nigeria and Canada ahead of the Toronto finale.
Under the theme “Africa to the World,” the expanded programme will combine the awards ceremony with industry engagements and business focused activities. One of the major events planned alongside the awards is the Headies Global Trade and Investment Summit, which is expected to bring together members of the creative industry, investors, businesses and other stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration and growth.
Although the main ceremony has been rescheduled, the organisers say activities under the “Road to The Headies” programme will continue during the period originally set aside for the event. Further information about the schedule, venues and participation arrangements is expected to be released through the awards’ official channels.
The organisers have also acknowledged that the change may affect guests who have already made travel plans or other arrangements for October. They apologised for the inconvenience and said further updates would be provided to help affected attendees plan accordingly.
Founded in 2006 as the Hip Hop World Awards, The Headies has become one of the major award platforms recognising achievements in Nigerian music. Its move to Toronto reflects the organisers’ wider ambition to connect African music and creative talent with international audiences, industry networks and investment opportunities.
The 18th edition will therefore extend beyond a traditional awards night, with the organisers positioning it as a platform for celebrating African music while strengthening links between the creative industries in Nigeria and Canada. More details about the events leading up to the ceremony and the final arrangements for April 2027 are expected to be announced in the coming months.
