Nigerian singer Adedamola Adefolahan, popularly known as Fireboy DML, has opened up about how keeping his personal life private has helped him avoid scandals and unnecessary controversy in the entertainment industry. The singer made the revelation while interacting with fans about his personality, public image and approach to his music career. Fireboy explained that he deliberately limits what the public knows about his private life, making it harder for people to misunderstand him or create narratives around his personal affairs.
“They don’t know me enough to misunderstand me. I don’t give them enough personality or gist into my personal life. I don’t have scandals, I don’t relate with other artistes, I don’t sell my music with gimmicks,” Fireboy said. The singer’s approach stands out in an entertainment industry where celebrities often share details about their relationships, friendships and personal experiences with fans through social media.
For Fireboy however, maintaining a level of distance appears to be a deliberate way of protecting his image while keeping the focus on his music. Rather than relying heavily on publicity stunts or controversy to promote his work, the singer said he prefers to allow his songs and artistry to speak for him. His strategy has helped him maintain a relatively private public image despite his rise to international recognition.
Fireboy became widely known after the success of songs such as “Vibration” and “Scatter” before achieving a major international breakthrough with “Peru”. His music has since taken him beyond Nigeria, while he has continued to build his career largely around his artistic output.
The singer also spoke about his early experience after relocating to Lagos to pursue his dream of becoming a musician. According to Fireboy, life in the city initially terrified him, particularly because of some of the things he witnessed after arriving.
He recalled seeing a person running mad and dead bodies on the streets, while the presence of cultists and the appearance of some Lagos residents also contributed to his initial fear. Despite the shock of his new environment, Fireboy said he chose not to give up on his ambitions and eventually adapted to life in Lagos. His latest comments offer an insight into the personality behind an artiste who has largely allowed his music, rather than his private life, to remain at the centre of his public identity.
