Nigeria has announced that nearly 10,000 former Boko Haram fighters have been reintegrated into society through its Operation Safe Corridor programme, a government initiative aimed at rehabilitating and deradicalising repentant insurgents.

Officials say the programme encourages fighters to surrender, undergo vocational training and counselling and return to civilian life as part of efforts to weaken extremist groups operating in the country’s northeast.

The development comes more than a decade after Boko Haram launched a violent insurgency that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions across the Lake Chad region. While Nigerian forces have significantly reduced the group’s influence, attacks by Boko Haram and its splinter faction, ISWAP, continue in some areas.

The reintegration programme remains controversial, with some victims and community leaders questioning whether former fighters should receive support while affected communities continue to recover from years of violence. Authorities however, insist that rehabilitation is a key part of achieving long-term peace and preventing a return to extremism.
