New Zealand has introduced a new short term work visa allowing eligible international graduates to stay and work in the country for up to six months after completing their studies, in a move aimed at improving post-study employment pathways.

The new Short Term Graduate Work Visa will take effect from 16 November 2026 and is designed for graduates who complete certain qualifications in New Zealand but do not qualify for the standard Post Study Work Visa. It will grant open work rights, allowing holders to work for any employer while searching for longer term employment opportunities.

Under the policy, eligible applicants must have completed full-time study at approved qualification levels in New Zealand. The visa is intended as a transitional pathway, giving graduates time to secure jobs and potentially shift into longer-term work visas such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa.

Alongside the new six-month visa, immigration authorities are also expanding eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa, particularly for graduate diploma holders at higher qualification levels. Officials say the changes are part of broader efforts to align immigration rules with labour market demands and attract skilled international talent.

The policy has been widely seen as a way to strengthen New Zealand’s appeal to foreign students, many of whom seek pathways from education to employment after graduation. However, the shorter six-month option also reflects tighter controls for those who do not meet criteria for longer post-study work rights.

The changes are expected to reshape post-study planning for thousands of international students, particularly those enrolled in lower-level qualifications, as the country adjusts its immigration system ahead of the 2026 implementation date.
