A fast moving wildfire has killed at least 11 people and left 19 others missing in southern Spain, making it one of the country’s deadliest wildfires in decades. The blaze broke out near Los Gallardos in Almería province, Andalusia, and spread rapidly through dry vegetation, fuelled by strong winds and extreme heat.
Authorities believe the fire may have started after a fallen power line ignited dry land, although the exact cause is still under investigation. Many of the victims were caught while trying to escape, with several found inside burned-out vehicles and others discovered on foot after leaving designated shelter areas. Officials said some of those who died are believed to be foreign nationals, including several British citizens.
Around 1,000 residents were evacuated as firefighters, military emergency units and aircraft battled the flames across difficult terrain. At least eight people were injured, including four who suffered serious burns and remain in hospital. Rescue teams continue to search for the missing while working to bring the fire under control.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and pledged government support for the emergency response. The tragedy comes as Spain and much of southern Europe endure another intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40°C, creating ideal conditions for fast-spreading wildfires.
The disaster has once again highlighted the growing threat posed by extreme weather across Europe. As prolonged heat and drought become more frequent, experts warn that wildfires are becoming increasingly intense and unpredictable, underscoring the need for stronger prevention measures and quicker emergency responses to protect lives and communities.
