Arsenal have made unwanted football history after suffering a shocking Carabao Cup elimination at the hands of fourth tier Fleetwood Town, who defeated the Premier League champions 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The result made Arsenal the first reigning Premier League champions to be knocked out of the League Cup by a fourth tier side, according to football statistics platform Squawka. It was also only the second time the North London club had suffered a League Cup exit against a team from the fourth tier, following their penalty defeat to Bradford City during the 2012/13 season.
Fleetwood, who sit 84 places below Arsenal in the English football league pyramid, took a surprise lead in the 21st minute through Aaron Loupalo-Bi. Arsenal struggled to turn their possession into goals before Viktor Gyokeres equalised shortly after the interval, restoring hope for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Despite creating several opportunities, Arsenal failed to find a winning goal. Their task became more difficult when 16 year old midfielder Max Dowman was sent off in the closing stages for kicking out at Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal following a heavy challenge.
Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch then played a crucial role, making important saves to keep his side in the contest before saving Bruno Guimaraes’ penalty in the shootout. Conor Haughey converted the decisive spot-kick to secure a famous victory and send Fleetwood into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the club’s history.
Arsenal manager Arteta described the defeat as a very sad day for the club, acknowledging that his side had created enough chances but failed to take advantage of them. His decision to make nine changes to the starting line-up also came under scrutiny after the gamble failed to deliver the expected result.
The defeat leaves Arsenal needing to recover quickly as they turn their attention back to the Premier League, with a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool coming up. Meanwhile, Fleetwood will celebrate one of the biggest victories in their history after eliminating the reigning English champions from the competition.
