Michael Carrick’s future as Manchester United head coach remains uncertain following the club’s disappointing run of results, with former Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann and Aston Villa boss Unai Emery emerging as leading candidates to replace him if the club decides to make a change.
United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como on Wednesday has intensified pressure on Carrick. The result came amid a difficult start to the season, with the club winning only two of its opening 11 matches in all competitions and going seven games without a victory.
Despite growing speculation about his position, Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth. The club has not officially announced his dismissal, leaving his immediate future uncertain as attention turns to the upcoming fixture.
Nagelsmann and Emery are reportedly among the leading options being considered by United’s hierarchy. Nagelsmann, who previously managed Bayern Munich and Germany, is understood to be open to an approach from the club. United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is also said to rate the German coach highly.
However, a move for Emery could prove expensive. The Spaniard remains under contract with Aston Villa until 2029 and reportedly earns between £10 million and £12 million annually. United would also need to negotiate compensation with Villa, potentially making his appointment a costly undertaking.
Other managers reportedly linked with the vacancy include Antonio Conte, Eddie Howe and Kieran McKenna. Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler has also been mentioned as a possible candidate, although reports suggest he is not interested in leaving his current position at this stage.
The situation has added to concerns about the club’s direction following a series of disappointing performances. Captain Bruno Fernandes also questioned Carrick’s tactics after the defeat to Como, although he is not expected to face disciplinary action over his comments.
With Bournemouth next on the schedule, United’s performance could become an important factor in determining the club’s next move. For now, Carrick remains in the job, while speculation over possible replacements continues.
