Nigeria, Ghana and Malawi have begun making arrangements to evacuate their citizens from South Africa amid fears of violence linked to planned anti immigrant protests expected on June 30.

The move follows growing concerns over rising xenophobic tensions and threats circulating on social media, with some groups calling for demonstrations targeting foreign nationals. Authorities in the affected countries have advised their citizens to remain vigilant and avoid areas where protests may occur.

Ghana has announced plans to facilitate the voluntary return of citizens who wish to leave, while Malawi has activated emergency response measures and opened communication channels for nationals seeking assistance. Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in South Africa has also stepped up monitoring efforts and urged citizens to prioritize their safety.

South African authorities have condemned any form of violence or intimidation against foreign nationals, assuring residents that security agencies are prepared to maintain law and order during the planned demonstrations.

The developments have raised concerns across the continent, as memories remain fresh of previous xenophobic attacks that resulted in deaths, injuries and the displacement of thousands of African migrants living in South Africa.
