A parliamentary investigation into Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has resumed just hours after he won back his Clacton seat in a by election he triggered himself. Farage secured 22,239 votes, defeating satirical candidate Count Binface, who finished second with 9,455 votes. The election was boycotted by the UK’s major political parties, leaving Farage facing 33 other candidates.
The investigation concerns a £5m gift Farage received from cryptocurrency businessman Christopher Harborne. Parliament’s standards watchdog is examining whether the money should have been declared under MPs’ rules. Farage has denied wrongdoing and described the money as a private gift. The inquiry was paused when Farage resigned as Clacton’s MP in July, but it was never cancelled. Following his re election, Parliament’s website has now listed the investigation as “active”, allowing the standards process to continue.
The development could create further uncertainty over Farage’s parliamentary future. If the investigation finds that he breached the MPs’ code of conduct, he could face sanctions, potentially including a suspension long enough to trigger another by election. Farage had presented the Clacton contest as an opportunity for voters to give him a fresh mandate while the investigation was pending. His victory gives him a renewed seat in Parliament, but it does not bring the standards investigation to an end.
The Reform leader also did not attend the official declaration of the result or deliver his planned victory speech, citing security concerns. The return of the investigation means Farage’s political problems are therefore far from over, despite his decisive victory at the ballot box.
