France Wildfire Forces 525 People to Flee as Landes Forest Burns

A fast moving wildfire in southwestern France has forced 525 people to evacuate as flames spread through drought hit pine forests in the Landes region. The fire broke out near Luglon on Thursday and had burned around 1,100 hectares by Friday. Strong and shifting winds have made the blaze difficult to contain, with the fire spreading to within about 2km of the village centre.

More than 500 firefighters, supported by six aircraft, have been deployed to battle the flames. Roads around the affected area have been closed, while evacuees have been moved to safety. No homes have been reported destroyed so far. The latest fire comes during what authorities describe as an exceptionally severe wildfire season in France. The country has experienced prolonged heat and drought, leaving forests particularly dry and vulnerable to rapidly spreading fires.

The Landes region has already been badly affected by wildfires this summer. Major fires near Arcachon Bay in July burned more than 50,000 hectares and forced up to 220,000 people to evacuate. With temperatures expected to reach around 36C in the area, firefighters remain on high alert as they work to prevent the latest blaze from reaching nearby communities.
