Former Scottish National Party (SNP) chief executive Peter Murrell has been sentenced to more than five years in prison after being found guilty of embezzling party funds, in a case that has sent shockwaves through Scottish politics.
Murrell, who is also the husband of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, was convicted over the misappropriation of party finances during his time in leadership. The court heard that funds meant for political operations and campaign activities were allegedly diverted, raising serious questions about financial oversight within one of Scotland’s most prominent political parties.
Delivering the sentence, the judge described the offence as a significant breach of trust, noting that Murrell had occupied a senior position of responsibility within the party. The ruling follows a lengthy investigation into SNP finances, which has been closely watched across the UK due to its political implications.
The case has intensified scrutiny on the SNP’s internal governance and financial transparency, with opposition parties calling for stronger accountability mechanisms in political funding. Party officials have maintained that they are cooperating with legal processes and have sought to distance the SNP as an institution from the actions of individuals involved.
Murrell’s sentencing marks a major development in a scandal that has dominated Scottish political discourse in recent years, adding further pressure on the party as it navigates public trust and internal reform challenges.
