British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation after less than two years in office, bringing an end to a turbulent tenure marked by policy reversals, political scandals and declining public support.

Starmer said every decision he made was aimed at putting Britain first and confirmed he would step down as Labour leader. He will remain prime minister until the party elects a successor, with the leadership contest expected to begin in July and conclude before Parliament returns in September.

The resignation comes after months of mounting pressure on Starmer’s government, which struggled with controversial policy decisions, high profile resignations and growing voter dissatisfaction. His leadership was further weakened by Labour’s poor performance in recent local elections and the rapid rise of Reform UK.

Attention is now turning to Andy Burnham, who recently won a key by-election and is widely seen as the frontrunner to replace Starmer. Burnham’s return to Parliament has strengthened expectations of a leadership bid.

Despite the challenges of his premiership, Starmer leaves office having led Labour back to power in the 2024 general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. Britain is now set to welcome its seventh prime minister in a decade as Labour begins the search for a new leader.
