The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to mobilise workers for a nationwide strike in support of the ongoing action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) if authorities do not take urgent steps to tackle worsening insecurity in Nigeria.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, said the labour movement stands firmly with teachers protesting the abduction of students and educators, particularly in Oyo State. He warned that organised labour would not hesitate to take solidarity action if governments continue to treat security challenges with insufficient urgency.

According to the NLC, the strike by teachers reflects growing frustration among workers who increasingly face threats from kidnappers, bandits, and other criminal groups while carrying out their duties. The congress noted that insecurity is no longer affecting only teachers but also healthcare workers, local government employees, farmers, and residents in vulnerable communities.

The labour body commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers for drawing national attention to the dangers confronting schools and called for the immediate rescue of all abducted victims. It also urged federal and state governments to strengthen security measures and restore public confidence in the country’s safety architecture.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over recurring kidnappings and attacks across several parts of Nigeria, with labour leaders insisting that the protection of lives and livelihoods must become a top national priority.
