The Pentagon has confirmed that the United States Secretary of the Navy, John Phelan is leaving his post with immediate effect. However, officials have not publicly clarified whether he resigned or was dismissed. Multiple reports indicate that his exit followed months of internal conflict with senior defence leaders, including Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, over military strategy and leadership decisions.
Phelan, a businessman and political donor appointed in 2025, had faced scrutiny from the outset due to his lack of prior military experience. His tenure was marked by disagreements over key issues such as shipbuilding programmes and broader naval strategy, which reportedly strained relationships within the Department of Defense.
His removal is part of a broader pattern of leadership upheaval at the Pentagon. Since taking office, Hegseth has overseen the dismissal or departure of several top military officials, raising concerns among critics about continuity and stability within the US armed forces.
The timing of Phelan’s exit is particularly significant. It comes as the US Navy is heavily engaged in strategic operations, including maintaining pressure in the Middle East amid a fragile ceasefire involving Iran. The Navy has also been central to enforcing maritime security and projecting US power in key global regions.
Following Phelan’s departure, Hung Cao, a former Navy officer and current undersecretary, has been appointed acting Secretary of the Navy. Cao, who brings decades of military experience, is expected to take immediate control during a period of heightened operational demands.
Despite the official silence on the reasons behind the leadership change, analysts suggest the move reflects deeper tensions within the administration over defence priorities, including how aggressively to expand naval capabilities and respond to global threats.
Phelan’s abrupt exit underscores a broader climate of uncertainty within US defence leadership, as the Pentagon navigates both internal divisions and complex international challenges.
