South African singer Tyla has once again etched her name into music history at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, held on February 1, 2026, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, as she took home her second Grammy Award in the Best African Music Performance category for her hit track “Push 2 Start.”
Tyla becomes the first artist to win the Best African Music Performance award twice since the category was introduced in 2024. Her 2024 win was for the breakout hit “Water,” which not only gave her a Grammy but also helped spotlight African music on the global stage.
At this year’s awards, “Push 2 Start” stood out in a competitive field that included Nigeria’s biggest names, Burna Boy (“Love”), Davido featuring Omah Lay (“With You”), and Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid (“Gimme Dat”), as well as entries from Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin. Despite strong African representation, Tyla’s record came out on top, winning acclaim from fans and critics alike.
“Push 2 Start,” released in October 2024 as part of the deluxe edition of her self-titled debut album, blends amapiano rhythms with pop and R&B influences. The genre-defying sound has become something of a signature for Tyla, who has been credited with helping bridge African music styles with mainstream global pop.
Tyla’s journey from Johannesburg to Grammy glory reflects her meteoric rise in the international music scene. She first turned heads with “Water,” a viral smash that peaked on international charts and brought a spotlight on South African music. With her second Grammy win, Tyla has solidified her place among the most influential African artists of her generation.
With back-to-back Grammy successes and continued global recognition, Tyla’s career shows no signs of slowing. Her achievements not only highlight her talent but also signal a growing appreciation for African music within the global industry.
