Record producer Samklef has ignited a major controversy in the Nigerian music industry by accusing superstar Davido of introducing toxicity and rivalry into the once collaborative and respectful music scene. His comments have sparked heated debates among fans, artists, and industry stakeholders across social media and entertainment platforms.

Samklef, a veteran producer and artist, weighed in on long-standing concerns about competition and negativity in Nigerian music. The controversy was triggered after producer-turned-singer Pheelz tweeted that music should be enjoyed without constant comparisons, a sentiment many felt spoke to rising tension among artists.

In his reaction, Samklef claimed that the industry was more harmonious and fun before Davido’s rise to prominence. He argued that when stars like Wizkid and Olamide were breaking through, the environment was marked by mutual respect rather than rivalry. However, according to Samklef, that changed with the arrival of Davido, whom he said brought about unhealthy competition, a “cultist mindset,” threats, fake streams, and “dirty moves” in pursuit of dominance.

“Music was fun when we started… no pressure, no hatred — just music,” Samklef wrote, before adding, “Then one Scorpio boy… Davido entered, and since then the industry turned toxic.”

Samklef’s remarks tap into wider discussions about competition within Afrobeats and Nigerian popular music. Pheelz’s original assertion that the industry has become overly competitive resonated with many fans who believe that constant comparisons, both online and in streaming charts can overshadow artistic creativity.

Critics of the culture argue that social-media-led rivalries and fan wars detract from the collaborative spirit that once defined the music scene. Proponents of this view say that while competition exists in every music market globally, its manifestation in Nigeria has at times fostered unnecessary tension between artists and fandoms. Some attributed this shift not solely to any one individual, but to the digital era’s emphasis on numbers, viral moments, and streaming dominance as measures of success.

Davido (born David Adeleke) is one of Nigeria’s most successful artists, with international hits such as Unavailable and Fall, massive streaming numbers, and a global fanbase. His influence on Afrobeats and Nigerian music is undeniable, having played a significant role in elevating the genre on the world stage. However, with success comes scrutiny, and Samklef’s allegations bring forward a narrative that Davido’s competitive drive has altered the industry’s culture.

As of now, Davido has not publicly responded to Samklef’s claims.
