Another 66 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa have arrived in Lagos as the Federal Government continues its repatriation programme for citizens affected by rising xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant sentiments in the country. The latest group landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, bringing the total number of returnees to several hundreds since the evacuation exercise began earlier this month.

The evacuation follows growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, where recent anti-immigration protests and attacks on foreign nationals have prompted many migrants to seek voluntary return. Nigerian authorities had earlier disclosed that more than 1,000 citizens registered for repatriation as fears over escalating tensions spread across migrant communities.

The Federal Government approved multiple evacuation flights operated by Air Peace after screening hundreds of Nigerians who expressed interest in returning home. The first batch of evacuees arrived in Lagos on June 11, with additional flights continuing to bring back affected citizens.

Officials say the exercise is aimed at ensuring the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad while diplomatic engagements continue with South African authorities to address concerns over xenophobic violence. Returnees are expected to receive support as they begin the process of reintegration into Nigerian society.
