The United Kingdom is experiencing one of its most severe heatwaves in recent years, with rare red weather warnings now in force as temperatures are expected to approach record levels. Authorities have warned of widespread disruption to transport, education and public services as extreme heat grips large parts of England and Wales.
The Met Office says temperatures could climb close to 39°C, while several areas have already recorded unusually high overnight temperatures, known as “tropical nights.” The red warning covers major regions including London, the South East, the Midlands, parts of the South West and Wales.
Hundreds of schools have either closed or ashortened their operating hours due to safety concerns, while rail operators have warned of significant travel disruption. Speed restrictions have been imposed on parts of the rail network to reduce the risk of heat related damage such as buckled tracks and sagging overhead power lines.
The heatwave has also placed additional pressure on Britain’s electricity network, prompting the National Energy System Operator to request extra power generation to meet increased demand. Officials, however, insist there is no immediate risk of blackouts.
Health authorities have urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take precautions against heat related illnesses. The UK heatwave is part of a broader surge in temperatures across Europe, where several countries are also battling extreme weather conditions linked to a powerful high UKpressure system.
