A deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left three children and a teacher dead, with two others critically injured. The 16-year-old suspected gunman was also killed after a community member confronted him inside the school. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the suspect’s possible motive.

The shooting occurred shortly before 1pm local time on October 15, 2026. Police received emergency calls reporting gunfire before officers arrived and secured the school. According to initial reports, the suspect fired at locked doors to gain entry to the building, prompting an emergency response and a lockdown.

Authorities confirmed that the children killed were aged five, eight and 11, alongside a teacher. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital in critical condition. Investigators are working to establish whether the suspect had any connection to the school and what led to the violence.

A community member reportedly followed and confronted the gunman, shooting him. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the intervention, while police and federal investigators, including the FBI, began examining the incident. The school district cancelled classes and activities for the following day, while counselling and other support services were arranged for students, staff and affected families.

The shooting has renewed concerns about gun violence in American schools. It also recalls the 2015 shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, which killed nine people. Although the two incidents took place in different educational settings, both highlight the continuing challenge of preventing shootings in places intended for learning.

Investigators are now working to establish the full sequence of events and the suspect’s motive. As families mourn those killed, the attack has intensified concerns about school security and the wider problem of gun violence in the United States.
