Nigeria’s Super Falcons have finally received the cash rewards promised by President Bola Tinubu following their historic triumph at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), bringing an end to a wait of more than a year. Each player is receiving the naira equivalent of $100,000, while members of the coaching crew and other team officials are receiving the equivalent of $50,000 each. The payment completes the financial component of the presidential reward package announced after Nigeria secured its record-extending 10th continental title in July 2025.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday, November 2, 2026. According to the commission, the funds have been paid to the players, coaches and officials who were part of the victorious squad. NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko praised Tinubu for fulfilling his commitment, describing the payment as an important recognition of the team’s achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports. He also acknowledged the work of the relevant government ministries in ensuring the rewards were delivered.

The financial reward dates back to July 28, 2025, when Tinubu hosted the team at a presidential reception following their remarkable WAFCON victory in Morocco. During the event, the President promised each player the equivalent of $100,000 and members of the technical crew $50,000 each. He also announced three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours for the team. The players and officials had already received documents relating to the apartments and certificates confirming their Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) honours before the latest cash payments were announced.

The Super Falcons earned the rewards through one of the most memorable performances in the tournament’s history. In the final played on July 26, 2025, Nigeria faced hosts Morocco in Rabat and found themselves two goals behind. However, the team produced a stunning second-half comeback, with Esther Okoronkwo converting a penalty in the 64th minute before setting up Folashade Ijamilusi for the equaliser. Substitute Jennifer Echegini then scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute, sealing a dramatic 3-2 victory and Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON crown. The competition was originally scheduled for 2024 but was postponed and eventually played in 2025.

The victory further strengthened Nigeria’s position as the most successful nation in the history of the women’s continental competition. It also marked the Super Falcons’ return to the top of African women’s football after Morocco eliminated them in the semi-finals of the previous edition, held in 2023. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade welcomed the fulfilment of the financial promise, expressing appreciation to the President and describing the reward as recognition of the team’s hard work and sacrifice.

The payment also follows a similar reward arrangement for Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress. After winning their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title in 2025, the players received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each, while team officials received $50,000 each in September 2026. Like the Super Falcons, D’Tigress also received three-bedroom apartment allocations and national honours as part of the government’s reward package.

Beyond the financial value, the completion of the payment is significant because Nigerian athletes have previously faced lengthy delays in receiving rewards announced after major international achievements. Dikko noted that fulfilling the commitment would give athletes greater confidence that their efforts and sacrifices for the country would be recognised. For the Super Falcons, the payment closes an outstanding chapter following their historic success, while reinforcing the importance of honouring commitments made to athletes who bring international recognition to Nigeria.
