Spotify is introducing new measures to make it easier for listeners to identify AI generated artists, while limiting the promotion of music created by profiles that appear to be entirely artificial.

From mid September 2026, Spotify will begin displaying an “AI Persona” label on artist profiles identified as representing AI generated identities. Their music will also be excluded from Spotify’s editorial and personalised recommendations by default.

Artists will be able to voluntarily identify themselves as AI personas. Spotify will also use human reviewers and AI tools to identify profiles that appear to be artificially generated but have not disclosed it. Listeners will be able to flag suspicious profiles, while artists can appeal decisions.

The policy comes amid growing concern about the rapid rise of AI-generated music on streaming platforms. Spotify has previously said it removed 75 million spam tracks over a 12 month period, with AI making it easier to produce large volumes of low-quality content.

Importantly, Spotify’s new system focuses on the identity of the artist, rather than automatically labelling every song made with AI. A human musician who uses AI as part of the creative process will not necessarily be treated as an AI persona.

The move follows Spotify’s broader push for greater transparency. In April, the company introduced its “Verified by Spotify” badge to help listeners distinguish authentic artist profiles.

Spotify is therefore taking a mixed approach to artificial intelligence: limiting the reach of deceptive or entirely AI generated artist identities while continuing to explore AI powered tools for music creation and discovery.
