Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have moved their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to a different school after just two days, following security concerns surrounding their daily journey to and from the school.
The couple’s spokesperson said the decision was linked to the distance between the school and the family’s UK home, as well as heavy traffic along the route. The security team reportedly determined that the journey created logistical challenges. The Sussexes thanked the school for its care and stressed that the decision was not a criticism of the institution.
The names of the schools and the family’s UK home have not been disclosed for security reasons. Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, recently began the new school year in Britain as Harry and Meghan spend more time in the country after several years living in California.
The school change has renewed attention on the Sussexes’ security arrangements in the UK. Harry and Meghan stopped being working members of the Royal Family in 2020 and do not automatically receive the same level of taxpayer-funded police protection as senior working royals. Harry has repeatedly challenged the arrangements, arguing that his family remains at risk when visiting Britain.
In May 2025, the Court of Appeal rejected Harry’s challenge over the government’s decision to assess his security on a case-by-case basis. His security situation is now being reviewed again, while Meghan is also undergoing a separate assessment.
The family’s return to Britain has therefore brought their security arrangements back into focus. While Harry and Meghan continue to maintain their life in California, they have indicated that they want their children to develop a stronger connection with the UK and their father’s family.
The quick school change highlights the practical difficulties of balancing that goal with the couple’s concerns over privacy and security. For now, the family appears to be looking for a school arrangement that allows Archie and Lilibet to settle into British life without creating additional security risks.
