Nigeria’s Falconets March Into World Cup Quarter-Finals After Dominant 3-0 Win Over England

Nigeria’s Falconets have powered into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after a commanding 3-0 victory over England in their Round of 16 clash on Thursday. The result sends Nigeria into the last eight while ending England’s campaign, and keeps the Falconets’ hopes of winning their first U-20 Women’s World Cup title alive.

Nigeria started brightly and took the lead after just eight minutes through Tosin Rafiu. The midfielder produced an impressive individual effort from the left, cutting inside before unleashing a powerful strike that beat England goalkeeper Katie Cox. FIFA described the goal as a potential contender for Goal of the Tournament.

England had opportunities to respond and came particularly close before half-time. After a VAR review awarded the Young Lionesses a penalty, Rachel Maltby stepped up from the spot, but Nigerian goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma produced one of the key moments of the match, saving the effort and helping Nigeria maintain its 1-0 advantage at the break. Uzoma also made several other important saves as England attempted to find an equaliser.

The Falconets returned from the interval with renewed intensity and doubled their advantage only two minutes into the second half. Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei finished with a left-footed volley after Nigeria capitalised on a corner that England failed to clear. Her performance earned her the Player of the Match award.

Nigeria then put the result beyond doubt in the 73rd minute. Substitute Mary Mamudu, introduced in the second half, latched onto a deflected assist from Precious Oscar before calmly finishing to make it 3-0. England continued to search for a way back, but Nigeria’s organisation and threat on the counter prevented the Young Lionesses from mounting a comeback.

The victory is particularly significant given Nigeria’s difficult start to the tournament. The Falconets lost 2-0 to Spain in their opening Group F match and drew 0-0 with China before producing a spectacular response against New Caledonia, winning 10-1 to secure their place in the knockout rounds. The England victory means Nigeria have now scored 13 goals in four matches at the tournament.

Nigeria also entered the tournament with a strong history at this level but without a championship title. The Falconets have previously reached the U-20 Women’s World Cup final twice, finishing runners-up on both occasions. The 2026 campaign therefore presents another opportunity to go beyond those previous achievements.

Head coach Moses Aduku said after the match that he believed England had underestimated Nigeria, but he immediately urged his players to move on from the victory. “The World Cup is just starting,” Aduku said, stressing that the team needed to focus on its next challenge rather than dwell on the result.

That next challenge is now confirmed. Nigeria will face Colombia in the quarter-finals on Sunday, September 20, after Colombia defeated hosts Poland 1-0 to reach the last eight. The match will take place in Łódź, with the Falconets continuing their pursuit of a first world title at the U-20 level.
