Up to 910,000 families in the United Kingdom are failing to claim a key state benefit they are entitled to, leaving an estimated £2.5 billion unclaimed, according to the latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions.
The data, covering the financial year ending in 2024, highlights a significant gap in the uptake of pension credit, a benefit designed to support older people on low incomes. On average, each eligible household that did not claim the benefit missed out on approximately £2,600 annually, a sum that could substantially ease financial pressures amid rising living costs.
Pension credit is aimed at individuals over the state pension age who have limited income. It provides additional financial support to help cover everyday expenses, and in some cases can also assist with housing-related costs such as ground rent and service charges. Despite its importance, the figures suggest a large portion of those eligible are either unaware of the benefit or have not applied for it.
The scale of unclaimed support has raised concerns among policymakers and advocacy groups, particularly at a time when many older households are facing increased economic strain. Experts say the complexity of the application process, lack of awareness, and stigma associated with claiming benefits may all contribute to the low uptake.
Officials have previously encouraged eligible pensioners to check their entitlement, emphasizing that pension credit can also act as a gateway to additional support, including help with energy bills, council tax reductions, and other forms of assistance.
The findings have renewed calls for greater outreach and simplification of the claims process to ensure that vulnerable households receive the financial help available to them. As the cost of living remains a pressing issue, ensuring access to existing support schemes is likely to remain a key focus for the government and social welfare organizations.
With billions still unclaimed, the figures underline a persistent challenge: bridging the gap between eligibility and access, so that financial aid reaches those who need it most.
