The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has expressed deep distress over allegations that her estranged father, Thomas Markle, possessed child sexual abuse images, revealing that she was informed of disturbing allegations against him as far back as 2018. Her statement follows reports that her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., reported their father to authorities after allegedly discovering the material among his belongings in the Philippines.
In a statement, Meghan said a letter containing allegations against her father was sent to London’s Metropolitan Police in 2018 and subsequently shared with her. She said she had been assured that the allegations were being investigated. Describing the latest revelations as deeply distressing, she expressed sympathy for any children who may have been harmed and called for justice, emphasising that the safety and protection of children must remain the priority.
The current allegations emerged after Thomas Markle Jr. reportedly discovered suspected child sexual abuse material among electronic devices and belongings stored at his father’s former residence in Cebu, Philippines. He subsequently reported the discovery to authorities. Reports indicate that Philippine investigators are examining the claims, while the FBI has acknowledged receiving information related to the allegations. However, the material has not been independently verified in publicly released forensic findings, and the allegations have not been established in court.
Thomas Markle Sr., 82, has strongly denied possessing the material, describing the accusations as “sick lies” in an interview with the Daily Mail. His daughter Samantha Markle has also defended him, disputing her half-brother’s account and claiming that the computers in question had been outside their father’s possession for an extended period. These denials add another layer to the family dispute as authorities examine the claims.
Meghan also addressed her long-standing estrangement from her father, explaining that her decision to keep her distance and prevent him from having contact with her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, was intended to protect them. Her relationship with Thomas deteriorated in the period leading up to her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, after controversy surrounding staged paparazzi photographs and his dealings with the media.
The latest developments have brought renewed attention to the fractured relationship between father and daughter, but the central issue remains the investigation into the serious allegations. Meghan has said she hopes justice will be served and that protecting innocent children will remain the priority. For now, the claims against Thomas Markle remain allegations, and the outcome will depend on the evidence examined by the relevant authorities.
