Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after Israel and Iran exchanged missile attacks for the first time since a ceasefire was reached in April, fueling concerns that the region could be sliding back toward a broader conflict.

Air raid sirens sounded across parts of Israel after Iranian missiles were launched toward the country. Israel authorities said air defence systems were activated to intercept the incoming projectiles, while residents were urged to seek shelter. Iranian officials described the attack as a warning and linked it to recent Israeli military actions in Lebanon.

In response, Israel carried out airstrikes on targets in central and western Iran. Iranian media reported explosions in several cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Karaj and Tabriz, as authorities temporarily restricted parts of the country’s airspace.

The latest exchange marks the most serious confrontation between the two countries since the April ceasefire that paused major hostilities. Analysts warn that the renewed attacks could jeopardize ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at transforming the temporary truce into a permanent settlement.

The White House had reportedly urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid immediate retaliation, while US President Donald Trump expressed hope that negotiations to end the wider conflict could still succeed despite the escalation.

With regional airspace restrictions expanding and fears growing over the possibility of a wider war, international leaders are expected to intensify calls for restraint as both sides weigh their next moves.
