Violent clashes erupted in Southampton after hundreds of people gathered to protest the murder of 18 year old Henry Nowak and the police response to the incident.
The protests were sparked by the release of bodycam footage showing officers handcuffing Nowak after he had been stabbed, despite his repeated pleas for help. The footage has generated widespread outrage and renewed scrutiny of police actions on the night of the attack.
During the demonstration, some protesters threw bottles and other objects at police officers, prompting the deployment of riot police. Authorities made arrests as tensions escalated outside a police station and nearby streets.
Nowak was fatally stabbed in December 2025 by Vickrum Digwa, who was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The case attracted national attention after footage showed officers initially treating Nowak as a suspect while his attacker accused him of racism.
The unrest has drawn reactions from senior British politicians, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who described the footage as harrowing and said there were serious questions for police to answer. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the violence while urging the public not to allow the tragedy to fuel division or hatred.
As investigations into police conduct continue, Henry Nowak’s family has appealed for calm, calling for accountability and justice while urging people not to use his death to inflame tensions within the community.
