85,000 households will receive visits from manufacturers after a serious fire risk was identified in certain tumble dryers, prompting urgent action from safety authorities. The issue, which affects specific heat pump models produced by Haier and its partner brands, has raised widespread concern and triggered a nationwide safety response.

The warning was initially issued last year, highlighting potential faults in tumble dryers manufactured by Haier and distributed under multiple brand names. These include Baumatic, Candy, Caple, Hoover, Iberna, Lamona, and Montpellier, brands commonly found in many homes. The concern centers on a defect that could increase the risk of overheating, and in worst-case scenarios, lead to a fire.

In response, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has now announced a comprehensive remedial programme aimed at addressing the issue directly in affected homes. According to the regulator, manufacturers have committed to visiting every household with an impacted appliance to carry out necessary safety modifications.

The OPSS emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging anyone who owns a tumble dryer from the listed brands, even if they are unsure whether their specific model is affected to check official model listings and contact the manufacturer. This proactive approach is designed to ensure that no faulty appliance goes unchecked.

For those who discover their tumble dryer is on the affected list, the guidance is clear and urgent: unplug the appliance immediately and stop using it until it has been inspected and repaired. Continuing to use a potentially faulty dryer could significantly increase the risk of fire.

Consumers are also advised to reach out directly to the manufacturer to register for the modification programme. This step ensures they are included in the repair schedule and receive the necessary fix as quickly as possible.

This large-scale safety intervention highlights the importance of product monitoring and swift regulatory action when risks emerge. While the situation may cause inconvenience for thousands of households, authorities stress that these measures are essential to prevent potential accidents and ensure public safety.
