American R&B singer Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after a UK court sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.
The 37 year old singer was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, after pleading guilty to affray over the incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, central London. Prosecutors told the court that Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a heavy tequila bottle during the confrontation.
Court footage reportedly showed Brown striking Diaw several times with the bottle before throwing punches, while his friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also became involved in the attack. Diaw sustained head and knee injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Judge Tony Baumgartner described the use of the bottle, particularly against the victim’s head, as dangerous. He also stressed that Brown’s fame and commercial success did not entitle him to special treatment under the law. However, the judge considered factors including Brown’s guilty plea, stable employment and charitable work when deciding the sentence.
Brown’s co-defendant, Akinlolu, who performs under the name Hoody Baby, received a four-month prison sentence, also suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 each towards prosecution costs.
The suspended sentence means Brown will not serve the eight-month prison term immediately, provided he complies with the court’s order. If he commits another offence during the 12 month suspension period, the court may activate the prison sentence, subject to the applicable legal rules.
Brown was arrested at a Manchester hotel in May 2025 after returning to the UK and was later released on £5 million bail. The case has attracted widespread attention because of the singer’s global fame and previous legal troubles. The sentencing brings the criminal proceedings over the 2023 nightclub incident to this stage, while highlighting the court’s warning about violence regardless of a defendant’s public profile.
