Chelsea have finally filled the gap left by Marc Cucurella, completing the signing of Spanish left-back Pep Chavarría from Rayo Vallecano on a five-year contract as new manager Xabi Alonso reshapes the squad ahead of the new Premier League season. Reuters reports that Chelsea will pay an initial £16.3 million for the 28-year-old, with a further £1.7 million potentially due in add-ons.
Chavarría’s arrival comes after Cucurella completed his move to Real Madrid, leaving Chelsea in need of an experienced option at left-back. The Spanish defender had become an important part of Chelsea’s team after joining from Brighton in 2022, making more than 150 appearances for the club before his departure.
Chelsea had been searching for Cucurella’s replacement for several weeks, considering a number of options before settling on Chavarría. Reports earlier in the summer indicated that the London club had agreed personal terms with the Rayo defender as negotiations progressed.
Chavarría brings considerable experience from Spanish football. He began his career with Figueres before spells with Olot and Zaragoza, eventually establishing himself at Rayo Vallecano. Since joining the Madrid-based club in 2022, he made 125 appearances across competitions and played a key role in Rayo’s run to the UEFA Conference League final last season.
His signing also fits the direction of Chelsea’s squad under Alonso. The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach is beginning his tenure with a team that has undergone another significant period of recruitment and restructuring. Chavarría gives Alonso a natural left-sided option with experience in a position that had become increasingly important to Chelsea’s system.
The move is also notable because of the relatively modest initial fee compared with the huge sums Chelsea have spent on other players in recent transfer windows. Rather than pursuing another expensive superstar, the club has opted for an experienced defender who can provide immediate competition and stability on the left.
For Chavarría, the move represents the biggest opportunity of his career. The defender said he was excited to join Chelsea and described the club as one of the biggest in world football, while pledging to give everything to help the team succeed.
Chelsea’s need for a replacement became particularly clear following Cucurella’s departure. The former Brighton defender had endured a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge but eventually became a key player, including during Chelsea’s run to the Club World Cup triumph over Paris Saint-Germain. His move to Real Madrid therefore left a significant hole that needed to be addressed before the new campaign.
Chavarría now has the opportunity to establish himself in the Premier League and compete for a starting position under Alonso. Chelsea’s first league match of the new season is against Fulham on August 24, giving the new signing limited time to settle into his new surroundings before competitive football begins.
