Donald Trump’s decision to switch planes while leaving the NATO summit in Turkey was publicly explained in July as a practical arrangement to allow US troops in Britain to see the newly Qatar-donated presidential aircraft. Weeks later, newly reported intelligence details have revealed a far more serious reason behind the unusual move: US officials had detected a credible Iranian threat against the president or his aircraft, prompting a covert operation to move Trump onto a military jet without revealing his true location.
When Trump departed Ankara on July 8, cameras captured him boarding the older Air Force One. At the time, the explanation was that he would use the traditional aircraft to fly to Britain while the newer Boeing 747-8 would also travel there so US service members could tour the newly acquired plane. Trump himself had said he was using the older aircraft “for old time’s sake.”
What was not publicly known was that Trump reportedly never remained on the aircraft shown boarding on television.
According to reports now emerging from The Washington Post, CBS News and Reuters, Trump was secretly moved from Air Force One to a smaller C-32A military aircraft at Ankara airport. The transfer was reportedly carried out using an elevated catering truck, keeping the president out of sight of cameras and observers.
The deception reportedly continued after the transfer. Journalists and some White House staff remained aboard the visible Air Force One and were unaware that Trump had already left the aircraft. The plane continued to Britain, maintaining the appearance that the president was travelling on board.
Trump, meanwhile, travelled separately on the C-32A before eventually reconnecting with the presidential aircraft in Britain. He later continued his journey to the United States aboard the newer Qatari-donated jet.
The significance of the story has therefore changed dramatically.
In July, the public saw an unusual aircraft arrangement and was given a relatively straightforward explanation involving the new presidential jet and US troops in Britain. The new reports suggest that security concerns were the real reason for the extraordinary secrecy.
US officials have reportedly told CBS News that intelligence agencies had detected a specific and credible threat from Iran involving a possible missile attack on the aircraft carrying Trump. The threat came amid intense military tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The White House has not publicly confirmed every detail of the reported intelligence or the operation. However, the emergence of information from US officials has provided an explanation for why such an elaborate effort was made to conceal Trump’s actual aircraft.
The episode also raises renewed questions about the security of the newer Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar. The aircraft has undergone extensive modifications for presidential use, but further upgrades are still planned. That has prompted scrutiny over how its security capabilities compare with those of the older Air Force One aircraft.
