Ghana’s national football team has made a bold managerial switch just months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, appointing experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach in a move that has triggered both excitement and debate among supporters.
According to reports confirmed by the Ghana Football Association, Queiroz will take immediate charge of the Black Stars as they prepare for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The decision comes after the abrupt dismissal of previous coach Otto Addo following a series of disappointing friendly results and growing pressure over the team’s direction heading into the global competition.
Queiroz, who brings decades of international experience, is widely regarded as one of the most travelled and seasoned managers in world football. His career has included managerial spells with Portugal, Iran, South Africa, Colombia, Egypt, and Oman, as well as high-profile roles at club level with Real Madrid and Sporting CP, and as assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. His appointment also marks his fifth World Cup appearance as a coach, placing him among a select group of managers with extensive tournament experience.
However, despite his pedigree, his appointment has divided opinion. Sections of Ghanaian fans have expressed concern over his World Cup record, particularly his inability to progress deep into the knockout stages with previous teams. Online reactions have been mixed, with some questioning whether his tactical approach can deliver success for a Ghana side placed in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
Historically, Queiroz has built a reputation for structure and defensive organisation. His most successful international spell came with Iran, where he guided the team to multiple World Cups and earned praise for improving their competitiveness on the global stage. He also led Egypt to the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2021, narrowly losing on penalties to Senegal, further strengthening his credentials in African football.
For Ghana, a team that has experienced both highs and lows at the World Cup—most famously reaching the quarter-finals in 2010—the appointment signals a desire for stability and experience at a crucial moment. The Ghana Football Association is believed to be banking on Queiroz’s tactical discipline and tournament know-how to guide a squad featuring emerging talents and established names into a strong showing.
Yet, expectations remain cautiously balanced. While some supporters see his arrival as a strategic masterstroke, others fear his conservative style may limit Ghana’s attacking potential on the world stage. With just weeks left before the tournament begins, the pressure is already building on Queiroz to deliver immediate cohesion and results.
