Andy Burnham has emerged as the leading contender to become Britain’s next prime minister following the resignation of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer after months of pressure from within the Labour Party.
Burnham, who recently won the crucial Makerfield by-election and returned to Parliament, is widely seen as the frontrunner in the upcoming Labour leadership race. The former Greater Manchester mayor has called for a “new path for Britain” and is expected to unveil plans focused on economic reform and greater regional powers.
Starmer announced on Monday that he would step down as Labour leader and prime minister after less than two years in office, citing the need to put the country first. He will remain in office until a successor is elected later this year.
Burnham’s decisive victory in Makerfield intensified calls for change within Labour and strengthened his position as the party’s preferred candidate. Several senior Labour figures have already thrown their support behind him, while former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has ruled himself out of the contest.
Despite growing speculation about a possible early general election, Burnham has insisted it is too soon to discuss such a move, saying his immediate focus is on the Labour leadership race and the future direction of the government.
The leadership contest is expected to begin in July, with Labour aiming to install a new leader before Parliament returns from its summer recess. If successful, Burnham would become Britain’s seventh prime minister in just over a decade.
