Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a new crackdown on illegal waste dumping, targeting criminal gangs responsible for toxic waste sites across England. The government has identified illegal dumps in Bradford, Runnymede and the Isle of Sheppey, containing around 22,000 tonnes of waste, which will be cleared as part of the latest national clean up effort.

Burnham said the National Crime Agency will work with the Environment Agency and police to identify organised gangs behind the dumping. Authorities will also use the Proceeds of Crime Act to recover money from offenders and make them pay for clean up costs where possible. Fines for illegal dumping will rise from £300 to £5,000, while 33 AI powered drones fitted with LiDAR technology will be deployed to detect and map illegal waste sites and help catch offenders in the act.

Burnham said the government would no longer allow criminal groups to profit from dumping waste while communities and taxpayers bear the cost of removing it. The move follows growing concern over illegal waste sites across England, with a recent investigation identifying major “supersites” containing thousands of tonnes of rubbish. The government says the new approach will combine tougher penalties, improved surveillance and stronger cooperation between councils, regulators and law enforcement to prevent illegal dumping and protect affected communities.
