A wave of unrest swept through Belfast following a brutal knife attack that left a man seriously injured, with violent protests, arson attacks, and clashes with police reported across parts of the city.
The violence erupted after a 30 year old Sudanese asylum seeker was charged with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of a man in his 40s in north Belfast. The victim suffered severe injuries and remains in hospital, while the suspect is due to appear in court. Police have stated that the attack is not being treated as terrorism related.
In the aftermath of the incident, anti immigration demonstrations spread across Belfast, with some escalating into riots. Homes, vehicles, and public transport were set on fire, forcing some residents to flee their neighbourhoods. Bus and train services were temporarily suspended as emergency services worked to contain the disorder.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the stabbing and urged calm, while political leaders across Northern Ireland denounced both the attack and the subsequent violence. Justice Minister Naomi Long accused online agitators of fuelling tensions and spreading misinformation that contributed to the unrest.
Police have appealed for restraint and warned the public not to be influenced by inflammatory messages circulating on social media. Authorities continue to investigate both the stabbing and the riots, as communities across Belfast grapple with the fallout from one of the city’s most turbulent episodes in recent years.
